Keeping Track of Web Sites

The DNS (Domain Name System/Server) keeps track of all the domain names on the Web so there are no duplicates.

Each web server has a unique IP address, much like the street address of your organization or home.

A series of computers called Domain Name Servers (DNS) keep track of the IP address for each domain. For example, if you type in Google.com in a browser the DNS determines that the Google server is at 64.158.56.56 and the request is sent to that IP address. (South Central College has 134.29.222.1 as their server address.)

The DNS system allows you to use words instead of numbers when going to a web site. It also allows you to change web servers without affecting your domain name, just the IP address behind the curtain changes.

Changing Hosts - a domain name pointing at a host provider with the IP address of 100.65.23.001[D]

Changing Hosts. The domain name moved to another host with an IP address of 35.120.87.456. The DNS table is updated if files are moved to a different host provider. Your customer uses the same domain name.
