The going rate for a professional developer for a basic 3-5 page web site starts around $1,000. As you add more features such as Flash movies, dynamic pages, and shopping carts, the price increases.
At South Central College our students build web sites as an optional part of their capstone projects in the Web Development course. This is a great way to get a site for a low price although the quality can vary. However, if you don't like the first site you get you can always have another site built next semester.
One of the things you want to insist on is having a site that is written using standard codes. A poorly written site, by someone that doesn't really understand XHTML code will only be an added expense in the future.
